Ingredients

1 lb (450g) ground beef

1/2 lb (225g) ground pork

1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs

1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, finely minced

1 tsp Italian seasoning

1/2 tsp sea salt

1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup creamy ricotta cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs: In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, sea salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are just incorporated—be careful not to overmix. Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and set them aside on a plate.

Cook the Meatballs: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Heat a generous splash of extra virgin olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs to the skillet in batches, browning them on all sides for about 5-7 minutes until they develop a rich, golden crust. Once browned, remove the meatballs from the pan and set them aside.

Assemble the Casserole: In the same skillet, pour in the marinara sauce and heat it until it begins to simmer gently. Carefully return the browned meatballs to the skillet, making sure to nestle them evenly into the sauce.

Layer the Cheeses: Using a spoon, dollop ricotta cheese over the meatballs and sauce, creating small mounds. Next, generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the entire skillet, covering the meatballs and sauce entirely.

Bake: Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake uncovered for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully bubbly and golden brown.

Serve: Once baked, allow the casserole to cool slightly. Just before serving, garnish with fresh basil leaves and drizzle a touch of extra virgin olive oil on top for added flavor.

Enjoy your Savory Meatball Marinara Casserole alongside crispy garlic bread or a light garden salad!
