Ingredients

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon ground ginger

½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs

1 cup canned pumpkin puree (ensure it's pure pumpkin, not pie filling)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk mixed with 1 teaspoon vinegar)

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9x5-inch loaf pan by greasing it lightly and dusting it with flour, or alternatively, line it with parchment paper for seamless removal later.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, thoroughly whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. This ensures even distribution of all the leavening agents and spices. Once combined, set this bowl aside.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter along with the granulated and brown sugars. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer on medium speed for about 3-4 minutes until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.

Add Eggs: Next, incorporate the eggs, one by one. Make sure to mix well after each addition. Don’t forget to scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure an even mixture.

Incorporate Pumpkin and Vanilla: Fold in the pumpkin puree and add the pure vanilla extract. Mix these into the butter and sugar mixture until everything is well combined.

Combine with Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the previously prepared dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and finish with the flour mixture. Stir gently until just combined; be cautious not to overmix—the batter should still be a little lumpy.

Fold in Chocolate Chips: Carefully fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the chopped nuts, if desired, ensuring they are evenly spread throughout the batter.

Pour Batter: Transfer the thick batter into the prepared loaf pan. Use a spatula to smooth the top for an even bake.

Bake: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 60-70 minutes. To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into the center of the loaf—it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs, but not wet batter.

Cool: Once baking is complete, remove the loaf from the oven. Let it cool in the pan for approximately 10 minutes. After that, gently transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Slice and Enjoy: Once entirely cooled, slice the loaf into generous pieces. It's perfect as a snack or dessert. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze portions for future indulgence!

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes | Servings: 10-12 servings

Enjoy the cozy flavors of pumpkin and chocolate in every slice!
